Megson – The Longshot

Megson - The Longshot
Megson's The Longshot featured pretty highly on my list of 'most anticipated' albums of 2010 and it certainly doesn't disappoint!
The Longshot is Megson's fourth studio album and follows in the footsteps of the critically acclaimed 'Take Yourself A Wife' which saw the pair nominated as 'best duo' in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
The Longshot is an upbeat affair with Stu Hanna's guitar coming to the fore and Debbie's vocals providing the perfect accompaniment. Megson have stayed true to their roots with tracks on the album depicting tales of the working class and the decline of the factory industries. However the two have broken new ground with self-penned tracks The Longshot and The Cabman which bring these themes to a contemporary setting.
It is rare that an album keeps you hooked from start to finish but every song on The Longshot stands out in its own right and reflects the excellent craftmanship of Stu and Debbie as artists leading the way in the contemporary folk genre.
This is one record which won't be leaving my side for some time!

Snow!!
Bristol, like most of the country has been buried under snow for most of this week.. now forgive me, but coming from Manchester I haven't seen a great deal of snow so when I arrived in Bristol on Monday I was a little bit excited! I've spent more time throwing snowballs and sliding down hills this week than since I was about five!
The only problem with all this snow is that its nearly impossible to get on with daily life.. the pavements in Bristol are a health hazard and everyone has been slipping and sliding into work for the past few days.. Our snow finally melted yesterday only to be topped up by another huge snowfall overnight. Its lovely waking up to a huge white blanket of snow but it has now turned into brown mush and the hills of Bristol are in a similar state .. today there were people out in their full snowboarding gear sliding down the hills on the mud. I don't think the parks of Bristol will be recovering any time soon!

Christmas is coming!!
I can't believe how quickly this term has flown by! I've been trying to think up ideas for Christmas presents for the family but so far am not doing all that well.. I have a couple of ideas in mind for my little bro, but what I'm going to find for my dad remains a mystery!
My mum and her sisters are in the process of falling apart big time. Two aunties X and Y are making life difficult for other people, it's all been building up for months but will probably kick off just in time for Christmas. They all have their own commitments and share the strain of caring for their mum, but they just don't seem to be able to accommodate for other people's lives anymore - if things don't happen the way they've planned them to then someone else gets the blame.
Thankfully, the traditional Christmas dinner at our house has been cancelled this year. Mum has cooked one too many dinners for everyone and is looking forwards to having the day off for once! It's a shame, but ultimately it will be nice to sit down to dinner as just the four of us for a change and not have to worry about the immense amount of cooking or avoidance of arguments involved with having the whole family around..
Uni is out in less than a fortnight which is exciting, although we have two important exams when we arrive back in January so no doubt my Christmas will be spent revising like mad.
Over for now,
Jen
